Black Coffee is a South African DJ, record producer, and songwriter who has taken the global music scene by storm. Born Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, he began his career as a DJ in the early 2000s, playing at local clubs and events in his hometown of Durban. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented and innovative DJs in the country, and in 2005 he released his first album, “Black Coffee.”
He discovered the DJ occupation between his 16 and 17 years old, showing a fascination and desire to learn more about it, which impulse him to study music theory at Natal Tech, but ended dropping out and joined with a couple friends to a soul-pop trio named ‘Shana’.
Coffee continued learning about electronic and music production, until 2003 when he was invited to Red Bull Music Academy, the catapult of his professional music solo career.
Two years later, the Black Coffee’s debut album came out, named “Black Coffee” including 12 titles and under his own Soulistic Label. In 2007 his second album “Have Another One” was released, and a third one followed it in 2009, “Home Brewed”. “Africa Rising”, a three-disc opus by the artist saw the public light in 2012, including a live version, and his latest studio album “Pieces of Me” was released in 2015.
The DJ also counts with two EPs: “The Journey Continues” (2016) and “Music is King” (2018), diverse collaborations with great and known artists as Usher, David Guetta and Delilah Montagu or Msaki, several prizes, a Guinness Record and performances in Hï Ibiza. “SBCNCSLY” is Black’s most recent single with the singer Sabrina Claudio.
The musician has a strong base of electronic and house, combined with some African jazz, club/dance and a minimalist particular style of his, that adds a fresh version of the deep house with modern sounds preserving the traditional ones at the same time. An original style with the passionate and methodic nature of him, are a successful mix.
