OrelSan
French Rap PhenomenonBiography
Aurélien Cotentin, better known as OrelSan, was born in 1982 in Caen, Normandy, France. His stage name combines a diminutive form of his first name (“Orel”) with the Japanese honorific suffix “San,” reflecting his early interest in manga and Japanese culture.
Before becoming one of France’s most acclaimed rappers, OrelSan graduated from a business school and worked various jobs, including night-shift work in a pizza factory. His multifaceted career has expanded beyond music to include acting, directing, and screenwriting, making him one of the most versatile French artists of his generation.
Throughout his career, OrelSan has been recognized for his sharp wit, storytelling abilities, and his willingness to address complex social and personal issues through his music. This approach has sometimes generated controversy but has ultimately established him as a significant voice in French hip-hop culture.
Musical Journey
OrelSan’s journey in music began when he met his future collaborator Gringe, with whom he later formed the duo Casseurs Flowters. His early musical influences were diverse, initially enjoying rock and metal before discovering hip-hop through friends he played basketball with.
His breakthrough came with the controversial track “Sale Pute” (2009), which gained attention and criticism for its provocative lyrics. Despite the controversy, or perhaps partly because of it, OrelSan’s debut album “Perdu d’Avance” released that same year, launched his career and established him as an important new voice in French rap.
